10 Days in Wyoming (Itinerary)
December 1, 2023 by Laura
Follow along with our detailed 10 day itinerary for our Wyoming trip! We had so much fun in Wyoming and saw so much. We hiked through Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, ate delicious food, toured the entire city of Cheyenne, soaked in the hot springs at Hot Spring State Park, and so much more!
An Incredible Wyoming Vacation
We had so much fun during our 10 days in Wyoming! We did so much, saw so much, and ate so much. Wyoming is an incredibly beautiful state that has something pretty to look at every corner you turn.
We did a ton of research prior to this trip to ensure that we would have a great trip. There is a lot of information out there covering Wyoming and the national parks. I hope our detailed itinerary that covers our ten days in Wyoming helps you plan your own trip to Wyoming!

Getting to Afton, WY
☼ 9:00AM - 7:30PM
We began our day by heading to the Austin International Airport and flying to Salt Lake City, Utah. There are a few smaller airports that are closer to the national parks. However, they can be quite expensive flights. We didn't mind the extra driving, and it allowed us to see a bit more of Wyoming.
Once we landed in Salt Lake City, we got a rental car, and hit the road! We made a stop in Evanston, WY to get all our groceries at Walmart. I highly recommend buying groceries prior to going to the national parks. It's cheaper, and it allows you to eat in nature without dealing with all the crowds.
Afton is about an hour south of Grand Teton National Park. This was a great stopping point for us and was close enough for us to catch the sunrise in the park the next morning.
Be sure to drive downtown to see the Elkhorn Arch. It is made from 3,011 elk antlers and is the largest elk horn arch in the world!
Agave Family Mexican Restaurant
☼ 7:30PM
We had planned on eating at Rocky Mountain Seafood, but they were about to close when we finally reached Afton.
We ended up eating at a small Mexican restaurant. It is really cute inside, and the service was great. You get free chips and salsa as soon as you sit down. We both ordered some enchiladas.
This was some pretty good Mexican, but we both thought that our dishes needed more flavor and seasoning. However, it was all still very much appreciated and eaten up after a long day of travels.

Broulim's Grocery Store
☼ 8:30PM
As mentioned previously, we bought most of our groceries at Walmart in Evanston. We still wanted to stop at Broulim's, however, to get a couple items that Walmart didn't have. First, we wanted some hatch green chile and cheese bagels. Unfortunately, they were out. Second, we needed some huckleberry jam! If you have never had huckleberries before, we highly recommend. They are so delicious, and the jam was worth the extra stop.
Broulim's is a fully stocked grocery store in Afton. It would also be a good spot to stock up on groceries before heading to the national parks.

☼ 9:00PM
We stayed in this cute little house that is located right off a golf course. There was a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living area. It worked perfectly because we could keep all of our cold groceries in the fridge and make ice in the freezer overnight for our ice chest!
We recommend checking this place out if staying in Afton on your way to Grand Teton National Park!

Grand Teton National Park
☼ 4:45AM
We couldn't come to Wyoming without stopping by Grand Teton National Park for a visit. We had heared the the sunrises in Grand Teton were next level so we woke up super early to travel from Afton to Schwabacher Landing. The early alarm clock was totally worth it! That sunrise was gorgeous.
After the sunrise in Schwabacher Landing, we saw Mormon Row and the Chapel of the Transfiguration.
☼ 9:30AM
It was then time to hike! We went to Jenny Lake and hiked the Cascade Canyon Hike. We saw Moose Pond (and a moose!), Hidden Falls, and Inspiration Point. We took the Jenny Lake Ferry back to the parking lot to save some time and energy.
☼ 1:15PM - 5:45PM
Our afternoon consisted of souvenir shopping at the Jenny Lake Store, a picnic lunch at Cottonwood Creek, and looked for wildlife at Blacktail Ponds, Snake River, Oxbow Bend, and Willow Flats.
☼ 5:45PM
We then decided to grab some dinner at Ranch House Restaurant in Colter Bay Village. We ordered the rainbow trout, shrimp penne pasta, and huckleberry cheesecake.
☼ 7:00PM
After dinner, we went to watch the sunset at Jackson Lake and then headed to our cozy cabin in Colter Bay Village.

Yellowstone National Park Day 1
☼ 5:20AM
On day 3, we headed from Grand Teton to Yellowstone first thing in the morning. Our first stop was West Thumb Geyser Basin. This was possibly our favorite stop of the entire Yellowstone trip!
Afterwards, we headed over to see the famous Old Faithful Geyser. It was so much fun to see in person. We also walked around the Upper Geyser Basin Trail where we saw many more geysers and hot springs.
☼ 12:20PM
We then enjoyed a picnic lunch at the Whiskey Flat Picnic Area and saw the Grand Prismatic Spring. Those colors are just absolutely beautiful!
☼ 2:45PM
We spent the rest of the afternoon driving around and looking at all the beauty. We relaxed a bit at a turnout near Firehole River Picnic Area, walked all the Gibbon Falls Trail (so pretty!), and drove through the Virginia Cascade Drive. We highly recommend the Virginia Cascade Drive. There wasn't a lot of people on this drive so we were able to get out and explore! We saw a marmot, a great view of Virginia Cascade, and walked through so many mushrooms!
☼ 5:30PM
We ended our day in Yellowstone eating a picnic dinner at Nez Perce Picnic Area which is right next to Yellowstone River.
☼ 8:00PM
During our time at Yellowstone, we stayed at Absaroka Mountain Lodge. This isn't located inside the park, but it was close enough that we could catch the sunrise in the park every morning.
→ You can read about our time spent in Yellowstone National Park in more detail on my Yellowstone National Park Blog!

Yellowstone National Park Day 2
☼ 5:30AM
For our second day in Yellowstone, we got up early again to head to Lamar Valley. On our way, we watched the sunrise and saw a herd of elk on the side of the road!
Lamar Valley is a bit of a driving distance away, but it was worth it for those pretty views. We also saw bison and pronghorn. A lot of people claim to see wolves, bears, and much more wildlife in Lamar Valley as well.
☼ 10:45AM
After Lamar Valley, we saw Calcite Springs Overlook (amazing!), walked the short distance to Tower Falls, bought a souvenir at Tower Falls General Store, and ate a picnic lunch at Lava Creek.
☼ 12:30PM
We then saw the incredible Mammoth Hot Springs! We walked along the trail known as the Mammoth Terraces Trail and took in all the amazing views.
☼ 1:45PM
We spent the rest of the afternoon on the Upper Terrace Drive, at Sheepeater Cliff, driving through the Virginia Cascade Drive again, and looking for wildlife. We saw an adorable coyote hunting for mice and very beautiful sandhill cranes!
☼ 5:00PM
We ended our second day in Yellowstone at Steamboat Point Picnic Area enjoying a charcuterie board and snacks. We then drove back to Absaroka for a good night's sleep.
→ You can read about our time spent in Yellowstone National Park in more detail on my Yellowstone National Park Blog!

Yellowstone National Park Day 3
☼ 5:30AM
For one last time, we woke up early and headed to Yellowstone! We watched the sunrise at LeHardy's Rapids, and it was absolutely breathtaking.
We then walked along the Canyon Rim South Trail. This is a two and half mile hike that starts at the Falls and goes up to Artist's Point. This hike was very fun and was so pretty. We both highly recommend!
The next trail we went to was the Brink of the Lower Falls Trail. This trail is less than a mile long, but it is steep. Your calves will be burning, but to stand at the top of the falls is 100% worth it.
Next up, we drove to the Grand View Lookout Point which gives you the same view from a different angle. I just don't know how you could get tired look at all this beauty.
☼ 11:00AM
Our next stop was the fishing bridge. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see any trout.
We had planned on finding a picnic area to eat, but it was raining. So we ate our lunch in the car really fast at the Pelican Creek Nature Trailhead. The Pelican Creek trail takes you through the forest and then to the lakeshore. It was a very easy and fun short hike.
Since the weather was a bit unpredictable, we decided to just hop around to different spots. We stopped at the Storm Point Trailhead, Steamboat Point, and Lake Butte Overlook.
At this point, it was time for us to move on with our Wyoming trip. This ends our time in Yellowstone National Park. Until next time!
→ You can read about our time spent in Yellowstone National Park in more detail on my Yellowstone National Park Blog!
Driving to Cody, Wyoming
☼ 1:00PM
We were then on our way to Cody, WY! The road from Yellowstone to Cody is very pretty, and you'll find multiple pullouts along the road where you can stop and get out. We sure were hoping that we would see a bear during this trip so this was our last efforts. Unfortunately, still no bears.
Historic Buffalo Bill Dam & Visitor Center
☼ 4:30PM
We couldn't drive past the dam and not stop. Plus, the dam is free to visit! You can walk all the way across the top of the dam. On the walkway, you will have beautiful views of the Shoshone River and see the Buffalo Bill Reservoir up close.
Inside the visitor center, you can learn all about the construction of the dam plus lots of other Wyoming information such as local wildlife, geography, and prehistroic artifacts. They even have a video that plays that talks all about the dam.
This is a very pretty spot with a very interesting history. We would recommend stopping by if you get the chance!

Trailhead Restaurant
☼ 7:00PM
Since we had been eating picnic meals for the last few days, we decided that we needed some really good food for dinner!
I ordered the Fungi Pizza. The toppings included roasted forest mushrooms, prosciutto, and truffle oil. It was absolutely delicious! I love pizza, and this was one dang good pizza. Brian ordered the Elk Medallion which was served with a juniper sage cream sauce, polenta, and broccolini. The elk was pretty good on its own, but that cream sauce made it really delicious.
If you love trying new things and want something more on the side of fine dining then Trailhead is the place. They also have great drink options!

Comfort Inn at Buffalo Bill Village Resort
☼ 8:00PM
Some of the hotels in Cody were booked up since we starting our trip planning so late. We found a spot at the Comfort Inn which is your everyday average hotel. They do offer a free breakfast buffet which is located in the building across the street. It was one of the better hotel breakfasts that we had, and the room is filled with cool Buffalo Bill decor.

Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site
☼ 8:30AM
The next morning we woke up early, ate the hotel breakfast, and hit the road. We were headed to Thermopolis to soak in the hot springs, but we decided to take a stop first.
The petroglyphs are a little over an hour away from Cody, and 100% worth the small detour. We arrived right before 8:30 in the morning, and were the only ones there which made this stop even more cool.
This petroglyph site is a 1300 feet cliff with more than 92 petroglyph panels. On arrival, you'll find a sign with a box that contains pamphlets that gives you all the details of petroglyphs. It is really fascinating, and we enjoyed our time here. It was one of our favorite stops of the entire trip!
While looking at the petroglyphs, don't forget to turn around and enjoy that beautiful scenery. Also, look for pronghorns while driving on the road to the petroglyphs!

Hot Springs State Park Bath House
☼ 10:20AM
One of the must-stops while on a state trip is a state park. This Wyoming State Park is extra fun because it offers a free soak in one of their hot springs!
The state bath house is open daily and completely free to use. All you have to do is sign in at the front, rinse off in one of their showers, change into your swimsuit, and soak. They have an inside pool and an outside pool. We chose the outside pool so we could also have a view while we soaked. The water was the perfect temperature at 104 degrees Fahrenheit and felt really good on our muscles after all those hiking days.
You can soak for up to 20 minutes which was really all the time we wanted to be in there. Afterwards, make sure to rinse off with their indoor showers. You may smell a little egg-like after soaking.

One Eyed Buffalo Brewing Company
☼ 11:00AM
Once our muscles were relaxed from the hot springs, we went for an early lunch at One Eyed Buffalo.
One Eyed Buffalo was the perfect lunch spot to grab some Wyoming grub. For each state, we make sure to eat the food the state is most known for. Wyoming's food is Rocky Mountain Oysters and Bison Burgers. We were able to get both here!
The Rocky Mountain Oysters were pretty dang good. I was a little iffy, but I'd definitely order them again. I especially liked them dipped in the cocktail sauce. We ordered our bison burgers cooked to medium, and they came out perfectly. These were really good burgers. No complaints here!

Hot Springs State Park
☼ 11:45AM
Like I mentioned previously, hangning out at a state park is a must for us during our trips. Hot Springs State Park is a little bit different than other state parks that we have visited. One reason is because it is based around Big Spring, the largest mineral hot spring. More than 8,000 gallons of water flow over the terraces each day! The terraces are so pretty to look at.
There are a few hiking trails at this state park, but we mostly stayed along the wooden paths that took you over the hot springs and to The Swinging Bridge that goes across the Bighorn River. Make sure to go check out the bridge as it is pretty fun to walk across (and maybe just a bit scary!).
We spent the rest of our time driving the scenic drive through the park. There's multiple sites along the drive to park your car, get out, and explore the areas. One of the most exciting parts about the drive is seeing the bison herd! We got really lucky and got to watch the cross the road. We were able to get some really cool pictures and just watch them graze.

Wyoming Dinosaur Center
☼ 1:30PM
If you love dinosaurs and history, carve out some time in your itinerary to visit this dinosaur museum. The museum walks you through the very beginning of life on Earth to the age of the dinosaurs.
You'll see many real fossils that have been dug up right there in Wyoming and many others that have come from around the world! It was really cool to see the fossils up close. Note that there are multiple standing dinosaur skeletons, however, there are not many interactive exhibits. You'll need to do lots of reading to get the full story of life.
We didn't have enough time, but you can also pay to go out to the field for a dig site tour.

Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway
☼ 3:00PM
Our time in Thermopolis had come to an end so we started to head towards Casper, WY! This drive is a little over two hours. Be sure to drive on the Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway which runs from Thermopolis to Shoshoni. It borders the Wind River Indian Reservation and has some of Earth's oldest rock formations. It is such a pretty drive!
Racca's Pizzeria Napoletana
☼ 6:00PM
For dinner, we chose a place that we close to our hotel. I can also always go for some delicious pizza!
We started our meal with some focaccia that we dipped in oil and balsamic vinegar. We then split a Sicilia pizza which had so much good stuff piled on top such as fresh mozzarella, salami, artichokes, and basil!
And since this was our first time dining there, they gave a free cannolis. You can't go wrong with that! This restaurant was such a tasty find.

Hampton Inn & Suites Casper
Unfortunately, we didn't get to spend much time in Casper. It was just a good stopping point in between Thermopolis and Cheyenne. This Hampton hotel was perfect for what we were needing- a comfortable place to sleep!

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest
☼ 9:30 AM
Day 7 was all about getting to Cheyenne, but taking the slow scenic route! The Snowy Range Scenic Byway takes you through Medicine Bow-Routte National Forest, and it was so pretty. Note that this byway closes from mid-November to Memorial Day.
There are lots of pullouts along the road where you can park your car and get out. There are also a handful of hikes that you can do as well. Check out Visit Laramie's Byway Itinerary which goes into detail of all the stops. My favorites were the Snowy Range Observation Point and Mirror Lake! Give yourself enough time to drive through Medicine Bow slowly. You will want time to take in it all in and appreciate the beauty.
J's Prairie Rose Cafe
☼ 12:45PM
The end of Medicine Bow is Laramie, WY so we decided this was the perfect place to stop for a bite. When doing our trip planning, J's caught my eye because their burritos looked so delicious.
J's Prairie Rose Cafe is a small cozy diner with a retro-style bar and checkered floors. We ordered the J's Philly Dip House Specialty and the famous J's 7220 Burrito. Both of them were so incredibly good. The only problem with J's is that it left us feeling like we needed a nap after all that deliciousness. Thankfully, we also ordered some coffee!

Wyoming State Museum
☼ 2:45PM
One of our favorite things to do when visiting a new state is to go to the state museum. Here you will learn all about Wyoming including geography, the old wild west, wildlife, national parks, dinosaurs, art, and Native Americans. There is so much to do and see in this museum including a fun interactive section for the kids!
Plan to spend at least a couple of hours here at this free museum!

Wyoming State Capitol
☼ 4:45PM
Another must-do thing while visiting a state is going to see the state capitol building. We were too late to go inside the building, but it was still fun to look at the outside.
Wyoming actually has one of the twenty state capitols that is a National Historic Landmark. It is a really beautiful building!

The Albany
☼ 6:00PM
If you want dinner in a cool building that has a lot of history, The Albany is the place for you! The Albany is located in downtown Cheyenne inside of an old hotel. It has great atmosphere and is covered in old pictures from the past.
We ordered the prime rib and the french dip sandwich. While it wasn't our favorite meal of the trip, it still was pretty tasty. The Albany is a fun place to spend an evening in Cheyenne.

Choo Choo Moo
☼ 7:00PM
Parked right next door to The Albany is the Choo Choo Moo ice cream truck so, of course, we had to try some! We don't have many huckleberry-flavored foods down in Texas so we chose the huckleberry ice cream. It was definitely the right choose. So good! Our Cheyenne trolley tour guide also said that huckleberry is the best flavor.
After ice cream, we headed to our Airbnb where we stayed for two nights. I suggest looking at airbnb when planning a trip to Cheyenne. They were actually quite a bit cheaper than hotel rooms!

R&B Breakfast Club
☼ 7:00AM
The next morning we woke up to head to breakfast. Little did we know that this was going to be one of our favorite vacation breakfasts ever!
R&B Breakfast Club is a small restaurant that is covered in Elvis memorabilia. Everywhere you look there is a different picture of Elvis. I absolutely love! What I loved even more though is their burritos.
We ordered a sausage breakfast burrito smothered in green chili and the Famous Amos which was a stack of hash browns with sausage, eggs, green chili, and cheese. They were both incredible. This is a must-stop when in Cheyenne!

Cheyenne Farmer's Market
☼ 8:00AM
The Farmer's Market in Cheyenne is a seasonal event that occurs on every Saturday from August to the first week of October. There a many local goods, produce, flowers, and baked goods to be found here. It is a fun way to spend a bit of your morning!

Cheyenne Botanic Gardens
☼ 9:00AM
Cheyenne's botanic gardens are so beautiful and the perfect way to spend a morning. First, we spent an hour or so walking through the outside gardens. You'll find many different areas including the labyrinth, peace garden, and pollinator garden. It was so peaceful!
We then spent some time in the Shane Smith Grand Conservatory which houses multiple tropical plants including a huge palm tree. There is also a fun little cactus garden as well.
Next we walked over to the Paul Smith Children's Village which was a lot of fun even as adults! There is multiple interactive displays and lots of pretty flowers in this area.

☼ 11:00AM
The Old West Museum will tell you everything you need to know about Cheyenne Frontier Days. You can read about the start of Cheyenne as a city, cowboy stories, and The Frontier Days history. They also have a huge room full of old carriages.
This museum made me really sad that we weren't traveling to Wyoming during the Froniter Days. It sounds like a blast!

Downtime
☼ 1:00PM
Brian actually has some family that lives in Cheyenne so we took some time out of our schedule to go visit with them.
Some attractions in Cheyenne that would be good to fill this time slot are Cheyenne Depot Museum, Cowgirls of the West Museum, Historic Atlas Theatre, Curt Gowdy State Park, and the Nelson Museum of the West.
Historic Governor's Mansion
☼ 4:00PM
I absolutely loved self-touring this governor's mansion. The mansion is decorated perfectly and tells you a story of what life was like when the governors lived there. You can walk throughout the whole house including the basement.
The staff also gave us a map of the surrounding neighborhood so we could learn about all the old houses around! If you love old houses, you gotta check this mansion out!

☼ 6:00PM
We then headed to go eat a bit! When planning our Cheyenne Itinerary, I found that multiple people recommended eating at 2 Doors Down on Reddit. I'm glad we did because it was so good!
We ordered the philly cheese steak sandwich with a side of chili cheese fries covered in red chili. This is just plain good comfort food here. The perfect weekend treat.

Chugwater Soda Fountain
☼ 9:00AM
When we found out that Wyoming had a small town that was home to a old soda fountain and was famous for their chili, we knew we had to go! Chugwater Wyoming is about 50 minutes north of Cheyenne, and we felt like it was worth the extra driving.
We ordered homemade root beer sodas, a coffee malt, biscuits and gravy, and a bowl of chili. Yes, even for breakfast! I just had to try it.
The Chugwater Soda Fountain is so much fun with the classic soda fountain feel. Go check it out if you want a slow morning filled with delicious treats.

Holliday Park / Big Boy Steam Engine 4004
☼ 10:45AM
Holliday Park is a good place to get some fresh air and take a nice stroll. There are sidewalks around the entire park and lots of benches to just enjoy being outside.
The main attraction at Holliday Park is the Big Boy Steam Engine 4004! This is a must-see when you are in Cheyenne. It is one of the eight remaining Big Boys, and the world's largest steam locomotive.

Cheyenne Depot Plaza
☼ 12:00PM
Our next Cheyenne activity was the trolley tour so we headed over to the Depot Plaza to wait. You can go inside of the historic Union Depot Plaza. There is a visitor center and the Cheyenne Depot Museum inside.
Also around Cheyenne, you will find many miniature statues. It is fun to find them all and read about Cheyenne's history. You will also find one of the big boot statues at the Depot Plaza. There are lots around town, and many people like to do scavenger hunts searching for all of them.

Cheyenne Street Railway Trolley Tour
☼ 1:00PM
A fun way to learn about the history of Cheyenne is taking the trolley tour! This is a 90 minute long tour that takes you all over the city. It is filled with funny jokes, history lessons, and fun.
We highly recommend this tour if you want to see all of Cheyenne!
Shopping
☼ 2:30PM
You can find many fun shops in downtown Cheyenne. Unfortunately, we were visiting on a Sunday afternoon so a lot of the shops were closed. However, we still managed to find a few that were open.
A must-visit shop is The Wrangler which is filled with so much western wear. We also visited Bart's Flea Market and Eclectic Elephant which were so fun.
Taco John's
☼ 5:00PM
If a new state has a fast food restaurant that we haven't tried before then we gotta go! Taco John's is a fast food place that started in Cheyenne. They are pretty much all over in this part of the world. We ordered some tacos and their famous potato olés.
We actually ate Taco John's in Colorado since we were on our way to Denver where we fly out the next day.

Wildlife Drive at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal
☼ 8:00AM
Okay, so this isn't in Wyoming, but it is a great way to kill some time if you have a later flight. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal was near our hotel and the airport.
This is a free wildlife drive that is eleven miles long. We saw bison, deer, prairie dogs, and lots of birds!
After the wildlife drive, we headed to the airport, dropped off our rental car, and flew home to Austin. We can't wait to visit Wyoming again!
50 States by 50
Wyoming was our third state for our 50 states by 50 challenge. We are planning to visit all the states in the United States by the time we turn 50 years old. To choose which state we travel to next, we will draw it randomly!
For each state, we will plan at least a 4 day trip that consists of visiting the state capitol and state museum, exploring a state park, and eating whatever food that state is most known for. I will be documenting all of our travels here on my blog and making vlogs as well which will be posted on YouTube. Read more about our 50 States by 50 Bucket List.
